The Lane Cove Concert Band has been running for half a century and for the past few years it has been focusing on re-engaging with lapsed players and adult beginners. “The institution of the Beginner Band programme clearly provides for a desire by many older people to learn (or re-learn) an instrument and play music”, the band tells us. “Many of these people, for one reason or another, have not been able to be involved with music earlier in their lives. Some of them have had absolutely no musical experience ever.”
A member of the committee, also the convenor of a primary school band program, reported that parents of school band members had often said how much they wished they’d had the same chance their children were having. This idea, and the challenge of recruiting new members, provided the impetus for creating the first adult beginner band. After the success of that initiative, a second band was formed for the same purpose.
